A Special Management Area is an area of public land congressionally designated, ensuring the area remains in public ownership while protecting prominent and valuable land resources (e.g., scenic, recreation, or wildlife values). Lands within a special management area are typically withdrawn from specific federal public land laws and are managed to protect resources identified and reduce user conflicts.
