Pulliam Trust awards $1.9 million in grants

The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust last week announced nearly $1.9 million in grants going to 22 Arizona non-profit organizations. They are:

A Stepping Stone Foundation: $55,000 to support preschool classrooms for about 35 children ages 3 and 4 from low-income families at Westwood Elementary School in the Alhambra School District in Phoenix.

Arizona Wilderness Coalition: $50,000 to complete the final phase of the Sonoran Desert Heritage Campaign to protect nearly 1 million acres of wilderness-quality public lands west and southwest of Phoenix.

Boys Hope Girls Hope: $50,000 to expand the Collegiate Success Program for youth from low-income families.

Corporation for Supportive Housing: $150,000 to develop and manage 240 to 300 supportive housing units for chronically homeless individuals.

Creciendo Unidos/Growing Together: $72,600 to provide 2,000 low-income, primarily Hispanic individuals residing in central Phoenix with programs that strengthen families, develop leadership and promote volunteerism and community engagement.

Greater Phoenix Youth at Risk Inc.: $100,000 to support the Arizona Quest for Kids education program to mentor more than 350 high-performing students in fifth grade through high school and ensure they complete their post-secondary education.

HALO Animal Rescue: $47,500 to support a collaborative project with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers: $25,000. Information on how the grant will be used was not available.

International Rescue Committee: $50,000 to support the Early Employment Project to provide pre-employment services for 150 newly arrived refugees to help them secure jobs in the security, hospitality, technology and dairy industries.

Land Trust Alliance: $80,700 spread over two years to help Arizona's land trusts build capacity, leadership and sustainability to develop an effective and cohesive conservation community.

Native American Connections: $80,000 to maintain and expand the HomeBase transitional housing and outreach program to assist more than 155 youths ages 18 to 24 move from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

New Life Center: $100,000 to sustain shelter and support services for more than 1,000 women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Phoenix Herpetological Society Inc.: $50,000 to complete construction of the Wildlife and Education Discovery Center.

Save the Family Foundation of Arizona: $100,000 for the Homeless Families Intervention Project to provide transitional housing, case management and support services to more than 160 homeless families in the East Valley.

Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center: $50,000 to construct three habitat enclosures for new arrivals to the Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program to assist the national captive breeding program.

Teen Lifeline: $116,000 to design a social-networking strategy for teens to reduce suicide, self-injury and other high-risk behaviors.

Tempe Community Action Agency Inc.: $50,000 for a second year for the Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program to maintain expanded case-management services for 150 participants and operation of the mobile shower trailer five nights a week in Tempe.

Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development: $84,000 for the Youth Enterprises Project to expand business opportunities for about 1,500 homeless and runaway youths in the central Phoenix area.

Unlimited Potential: $35,000. Information on how the grant will be used was not available.

Valley Forward Association: $80,000 to develop the Arizona Forward coalition as the steward of a statewide vision promoting sustainable economic development in balance with environmental needs.

Valley of the Sun United Way: $400,000 for the Homelessness and Hunger Funders Collaborative to assist the homeless and those needing food in Maricopa County.

VisionQuest 20/20: $65,000 to develop a marketing plan for a low-cost vision screening program to assist 12,000 children in preschools and central Phoenix school districts
