Description of Event

Wildflowers and Wilderness: March 23
The Arizona Wilderness Coalition (AWC) and local award-winning photographer/author Colleen Miniuk-Sperry are partnering to raise awareness about protecting some remarkable Sonoran Desert lands in western Maricopa County. The Sonoran Desert Heritage citizen’s proposal aims to protect approximately 750,000 acres of sensitive wildlife habitat and rugged mountains in western Maricopa County through an act of Congress; it was most recently featured in January’s Phoenix Magazine.
On March 23rd, Colleen and Arizona Wilderness Coalition staff will be at Changing Hands to sign her new book Wild in Arizona: Photographing Arizona’s Wildflowers, A Guide to When, Where, and How (2012, Analemma Press), and present information on the Sonoran Desert Heritage conservation proposal. A Q & A session will follow, along with opportunities to get involved with the conservation campaign itself and sign up for photography workshops with Colleen.

Colleen’s work has been published in National Geographic calendars; Arizona Highways magazine, books, and calendars; AAA Highroads; Native People; Pop Photo; Golf Illustrated; Lighthouse Digest; Vancouver View; Experience AZ; InsideOutside Southwest; Atlanta Golf; AA Golf; North Valley Magazine; Sonora Es; Smith-Southwestern calendars; and a broad variety of other publications. She enjoys leading photography outings for Arizona Highways, Arizona Wildlife Federation, Through Each Others’ Eyes, and numerous private workshops, where she has become known for her inquisitive storytelling approach, instruction intensive style, and enthusiasm for exploration.

AWC frequently partners with a variety of organizations to raise awareness about conservation and the irreplaceable values that wilderness provides to society.  Ian sums up the Sonoran Desert Heritage effort: “We hope that our efforts to conserve wild lands for future generations will be rewarded not by this generation, but by those of the future who will be able to enjoy Sonoran Desert wildflowers two or three centuries from now.  That’s what conservation is all about.”
